Acknowledged by their
community for their
spiritual and cultural
knowledge, Elders carry
wisdom, life experience, and years
of learned teachings. They serve
as advisors, teachers, leaders, and
mentors, playing a critical role in
preserving traditions and ensuring
cultural continuity. The National
Gathering of Elders Kanata (NGE
Kanata) recognized the need for
a dedicated platform for Elders’
voices—a place for them to intermingle
with like-minded, similarly aged
individuals and their families, while
also providing opportunities to bridge
the generational gap by connecting
with youth.
NGE Kanata was federally
incorporated as a not-for-profit
in 2017. The organization’s vision
is, “Gathering the First Peoples
of Kanata, igniting the spirit of
sharing and celebration through
the guidance and wisdom of
the Elders, walking in harmony
and unity.” The mission of NGE
Kanata is to create opportunities
to bring diverse First Peoples
together through national
gatherings. Additionally, it aims
to build and strengthen the
connection between First Peoples
and non-Indigenous groups,
while celebrating and sustaining
the environment, languages,
identities, and cultures.
