Kelvin Ray Oxendine Writes the Lumbee Legacy Back Into History

Some stories are not written from research. They are written from bloodline. Kelvin Ray Oxendine, 37, an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and a direct descendant of the legendary Henry Berry Lowrie, carries one of those stories—and he has finally brought it to the page.

His debut historical fiction novel, Beneath the Swamp's Shadow, is a reclamation. It pulls two of North Carolina's most pivotal yet overlooked events from the margins of American history and places them exactly where they belong: at the centre of the Indigenous story.

What sets Oxendine's work apart is not just what he writes, but how he writes it. The novel is structured around oral tradition—Elders' voices threading through the narrative, guiding younger generations through lessons of defiance, kinship, and identity. For Indigenous readers, that distinction matters deeply.
